My mother or my grandmother had this sweet little bowl that I found and decided I wanted to draw as a small still life. I filled it with tangerines and set it up against a white surface and background. I decided to work on orange Canson Mi Teintes paper so I could get the orange glow to show through the whole drawing and give a warm color harmony to the drawing. The finished size is 7 1/2" x 8 1/2" don't ask me how I ended up with the all the 1/2" I just started drawing and that's what happened.
I'm still working on the tulips, I keep working on different areas and setting it down for a while to look at and ponder.
Nice work Kendra. I love the 'warmth' you have created.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful bowl! Definitely deserves to be in a still life. Lovely glow to the piece, great composition. I too work without bothering about dimensions, makes framing tricky but oh well... :-)
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I have been curious about the effects of a colored ground behind a CP painting. I was at an oil workshop recently, and he used orange acrylic as a ground for some of his paintings. He felt that it gave them a special glow. I might have to try that! Your oranges certainly have a special glow!
ReplyDeleteThank you Richard, Teresa and Katherine! I have also taken classes from oil and pastel instructors who have used a warm orange, red or burnt sienna background and I like the glow that comes through the entire painting.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful drawing Kendra.
ReplyDeleteWhich side of the Mi Teintes did you use? I've never got on very well with the paper which is such a shame as the colour range is really good. Not sure if I used the wrong side for cps?
Sue, I use the less textured side which is actually the "wrong" side but the other side has too many bumps.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I've just started a blog and wanted to use a picture of a bowl of oranges as the background image. I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to let me use yours? I'd edit out the background so just the bowl and fruit remained.
ReplyDeleteThis wouldn't be for profit at all. Let me know if that's okay.
Thanks!
Hi Meg, thank you for asking and I understand it wouldn't be for profit but I have sold this piece with respect to the new owner, would rather not share the image. Best of luck with your new blog!
ReplyDeleteNo problem, thanks for getting back to me!

P.s. your art is GORGEOUS :D
