This is the 12x12" piece I began last month for the Newport Artist Guild Demo. The surface is gessoboard with a coat of Terra Cotta Colourfix primer applied. I worked the colored pencil with solvent in order to apply the color thickly and remove most of the surface texture. I'm now going to varnish this piece and frame it without glass.

Blue Plate Special #2

Again, Kendra, this is gorgeous! I love the blue plate. You should demonstrate how you prime the gessoboard on your blog - I'd love to see that. Hope to see more of these!

What kind of varnish do you use? How is that differnt from framing it with glass?

I use Krylon Kamar Varnish in a spray form. The Kamar is non yellowing. Two or three coats. The varnish protects the colored pencil drawing from being smudged so you can touch it without damaging the drawing. Thus, I don't have to frame under glass. The piece is presented similar to an oil painting.
