Beach Dunes

After finishing the candy apples, I was inspired to draw a simple scene of beach dunes and grasses. I worked on a Utrecht brand 10x10" cradled wood panel with colored pencil. I didn't prepare the surface, just worked directly onto the wood, leaving a 1/2 border of the wood showing around the drawing. The natural organic surface of the wood makes a nice background to frame this nature drawing.

I had to turn the word verification setting back on when leaving comments as I was receiving spam comments in emails as soon as I turned the setting off. Thankfully the comments weren't showing up on my blog. Hope commenters don't mind having to type those pesky characters.

I am going to have to try one of those cradled boards for colored pencil! This is so beautiful, and it's ready to go right up on the wall! I love the gentle texture in the sand and the softly waving grasses.

I like the flow/movement you have created in this piece!

I have been considering ditching the word verification but now that I read that you have received spam, humm...maybe it is a necessary evil.

Nice work, Kendra. Its sensitivity is very appealing.

Wow, nice!

If you had prepared the surface, what would you have used? How would it have looked different?

The cradled wood boards are really fun to work on and I had a very inspirational photo of the dunes to work from! Jenn, some artists prepare the wood with a layer of gesso under the drawing area. I haven't tried it yet.

Love the soft look of this piece. I've recently been looking to doing cp on bare wood. I have one question - how do you seal it when finished?

Kathy, I spray the wood with Lascaux UV fixative or you can use Krylon UV Resistant Clear, make sure the wood is sealed. Then I brush on Golden UVLS Polymer Gloss, several coats to the top and sides.

This piece sold the first day the show opened, so I guess it was well liked!
